Cuil - Does the new search engine stand a chance against Google?
Today marked the new era of search!….. Well that’s what will happen if new search engine Cuil has it’s way.
New search engine Cuil (pronounced COOL) had launched today, claiming to have indexed the most pages out of any search engine ever including Google.
Cuil is the product of a few search engine experts, Tom Costello, Anna Patterson, and Russell Power.
After having a play around with the search engine, I have a feeling that Cuil does in fact have some improvements on Google. Especially by including features like categories so that searches can be refined further. I also like the fact search results are ordered by content rather than popularity. This is great for finding what you want.
I however do not like the magazine style layout. It is not entirely logical and would be easy to skip over an important search result. This might however be something that just takes some getting used to after years of using Google.
While this new effort is great. I agree with many other people that it may be impossible to beat Google in search due to the sheer size of Google.
I really do applaud the founders of Cuil for not being afraid to try. I think it will become a hot technology company, and will probably take over from Yahoo as Google’s main competitor.
Chris Brogan has already stated on his blog that he has had difficulty finding his own site on Cuil. I myself also had difficulty finding Enspri, and the result was well out of date. I also noticed that Cuil does not even come up on the first page of it’s own search result.
Tech Crunch also have a good early review of the new search engine here. They also make the point that Cuil is a new search engine and Google is a decade old. So it can’t really be evaluated yet.
Only time will tell which search engine is better. However early results still suggest Google is king of search.
