I guess my opinion is that It is a great ad. It makes my Top 10. However I think that Apple have made better ads since then. I do agree it would have been a very challenging and exciting ad at the time, and I wish i had been around at that point in computing to see it air. However Apple has come a long way since then, and while I think it deserves a Top 10 spot I think that Apple has grown hugely and that is represented in their advertising since.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. The 1984 Apple ad was quite emotional if you can manage to put it in the context of the time and mindset that it aired. You’ve no idea how bold an ad this was in America in 1984.

We were all aware that we were getting sucked into a dark future of IBM and Microsoft. But for somebody to publicly challenge that notion was heresy. When the commercial aired, I had to leave the room and was quite shaken up. I had bought into the dark side. I saw in that commercial things about myself that I did not want to face.

These are some of my favorite Apple ads as well. Apple also made some great Apple II ads back in it’s day. (I’ve had a Mac since 1984, and Apple II before that.) I help grandparents learn technology, and it would make my job easier if the all just bought Macs. It is exciting to see lots of folks switching to Macintosh.

The ‘Think Different’ ad brought to mind the recent MS ads with the moniker ‘I am PC’ by famous people also brought to mind the fact that MS is still copying Apple.

You may not appreciate the original 1984 Apple Macintosh commercial, but it’s won more awards than any commercial, from any source, ever by advertising industry roundups, even more than 20 years after it aired just that once, officially. It did actually air on a local station just before in order to qualify for some award. I kind of miss the HeloCar ad, but I like the more biting ads like that most recent getamac ad with PC spending all the money on advertising. I just wish Apple could show the Mac in action rather than just these abstract types.
